I never expected to own any of these due to the exorbitant price tag they usually carry. At the ATS Conference in July I got an excellent price on a ~2" juvie and ended up winning one of its sac mates in the raffle. I was doing a serious happy dance!

Behavior-wise, the two of them are as different as night and day. "Dungaree" had an impromptu rehousing at 3:30 a.m. about a week after arriving home. I learned in the wee hours of the morning that M. balfouri have amazing teleportation capabilities and that when I have my hands full of captured spider I can open large rubbermaid containers with my toes... Anyway, into its new enclosure it went on 8/11/2011 and has only been seen on rare occasion since.

"Denim", on the other hand, maintains a strict routine which includes sitting on top of her webbed mound and 'basking' for the better part of the day before retiring to her burrow at night. S/he has always been quite willing to pose for pictures.

This evening s/he was out and about. Unusual as s/he is usually a daytime basker, and goes into the burrow when the sun goes down. Thought I would take the opportunity to get some pics.

John, what tips can you give us for breeding these lovelys? I have a pair that I'll be breeding once the male matures. About how many slings did you get?

Beth, this girl is only two years old, but is 5". I purchased her as a 1/2" spiderling. She molted 11/05/11; I bred her the last week of December and twice in January. I left her in her terrarium, which have extensive webbing. The temperature here in Miami, Florida is really nice during that time of year. The days are in the mid-seventies and the nights are in the sixties. I mentioned this because I keep the window opened in my tarantula room. I allow her substrate to completely dry out and once every three months I will moisten half the substrate. The feeding was normal, about three crickets a week. Because of the webbing it was difficult to see the sack. The sack is in the shape of a hammock. I read that this specie made good parenting so I decided to leave the sack with the mother. They are good mothers. Prey is devoured by the entire clan. Once I threw in a cricket and the mother grab it and went into a web tunnel; there were about thirty babies out in view. When they noticed that she had a cricket, most went down the tunnel where she was except about five. I don't know if she was trying to hide the kill from them or moved them to a secluded place where they could feed. I must get a camcorder to film this behavior. I have several communal species setup, but I have never observed this behavior before. I hope I was a help.

JOHN 3:16
06-13-2012, 10:52 PM
This is truly a communal specie. I will take a picture of the mother feeding her babies. She will kill the prey then take it in the tunnel web (You should see the spiderlings running down the tunnel behind her).

I presently own 201 tarantulas, 135 species, and the Monocentropus balfouri is the most amazing tarantula I have. It is beautiful, hardy, and visible most of the time.; not to mention the intricate webbing it constructs. The mothering instinct is amazing. I wish I had a video camera to show how she raises her babies, but here are a few pictures. I will explain what she is doing.

Here mommy is dispatching crickets for her brood

She hands out a meal to the bolder spiderlings.
37187

I put several (5) more crickets in the terrarium, which she immediately collected and starts down the burrow to feed the remaining babies. This is exciting stuff to witness. :TShock:

Amazing stuff. Hysterocrates also feed their young. The mother will kill crickets and lay them down for them to eat. They'll be climbing all over her legs and head. She can instantly identify and nail a cricket, but somehow none of her brood is injured in the process or mistaken for prey.

I have to say that this sling has created the most elaborate home in a pill bottle that I've ever seen. I keep her substrate very moist, and she dug out a nice L shaped burrow along the side of the cylinder. She then has a funnel web that ends in a neat hammock. I'll try to get a picture but it's tough with my phone. She chills in her hammock most of the time.

Her rear end has filled out and is a nice shiny plum color. I'm so glad to have been introduced to this species through this thread. This is unique.

Recently re-housed my M.balfouri from her 2.5gal to a 5gal. Even though she spends most of her time with her toes barely visible at her burrow entrance, she does come out nightly to make her rounds so I thought she'd appreciate a little more room.
I usually re-house in the bathroom with my more unpredictable OW's (as to prevent injury or escape), but this girl is pretty chill.:TCool:
She wasn't too happy about being dug up, but she soon submitted, and I coaxed her over into her new home.

There's a lot of hazards in that cage that make me nervous, lots of hard objects to fall on, and shallow subtrate. Why have the substrate level? It's much more inetresting with slopes.

There's a lot of hazards in that cage that make me nervous, lots of hard objects to fall on, and shallow subtrate. Why have the substrate level? It's much more inetresting with slopes.

Substrate is 5" deep, and does have a very small (unnoticeable from the top view I guess) slope so the hide side is taller than the water dish side. I don't worry too much about making slopes (though I always do make a little slope from one side to the other), I've noticed most of my spiders will churn up and re-slope/do bizarre things with their substrate anyway, I think it's more interesting to see the changes they make than starting out with something very interesting.

I'm not too nervous about the wood piece in there... or I wouldn't have put it in. It was very smooth and no sharp points. Serves as an interesting anchor point for webbing. Somewhat reminded me of Socotra Island with its amazing trees.

Can't wait to see the tank webbed up, looks like it will still be a while though as she is still staying put under the cork bark.

I suppose these have gotten to cheap that I was given 1.2 balfouri, perhaps the fact my bday was Friday helped as well? I know this species is communal and I wanted to keep this trio as such. What is the proper way or steps into introduce all three adults into a tank?

Dang it would be neat to get some M Balfouri!! Really neat looking species... Great question Bam, I've been wondering the same about reintroducing individuals of my Poeci babies when they get older... But first I'd suggest having all of them VERY well fed! Especially the Female! (Am I to understand you have Two Males and One Female?)... .. if you loose one of the males to the female... I would think the other might be treated more hospitably?? LOL ... I Really have no clue as to how the two males would interact with eachother in a Female's terrarium... Are they Mature?? And I'm not sure if it would be better if you inserted all three into a New terrarium, or if it would be better if the female were in an established terrarium.. ... One way or the other, I for one would like to see a video of the introduction!

Kevin, you may end up having to get another MM for your lady. No idea how long MM balfouri live after their maturing molt. Once your female molts, I'd wait at least a full month after her 1st post-molt feeding before pairing her. She'll need to restore her reserves and heal completely inside to ensure she's ready. :)

LOL...

I've been searching for a MM myself and the one I'm in contact with a few days ago who said he'll sell his to me doesn't care to reply anymore to my PMs ugh.
The owner said the UMD was Nov 2015 and has been paired to two different females. If he doesn't reply to me within the day, I might just buy the 2" US from another seller instead.

Snap up that 2"! :D

I went thru my old files, and mine were hatched out mid-to-late Sept. 2014 !!!!!

So I guess that one IS a MM. Wow.... I am speechless. :(

Yeah, sent him a PM and waiting for a reply. My girls can still wait one more molt anyways. ;)

They are quite fast growers eh? :)

Paired the male to female #2, it was difficult for him to make an insert coz my female won't come out of the burrow enough for him to easily get under. I hope he had a good insert, I'm really think he did. ;)

Lol, ranchibi the 1st pic is a MF, she was paired with the male (2nd pic) but decided to molt.
In a few weeks I might try to pair them again, hoping the male will still be good. ;)

Got me 3 fat kids! Yay! :)
After 2 failed sacs, I decided to just get a few in exchange for one of my female Ts (+cash) and try a small communal setup.
