I am housing them in the cups I got them in. Just took everything out and gave them fresh sub, cork and a premade burrow which one ran right into but the other played king of the mountain on her cork.

YEAH! I can be a member here now!

On Friday, someone gave me this 3" girl (who I have already sexed months ago as a female).

Fietsy girl. Not a tread pose yet, but she throws her rump in the air often and flicks some. She is sitting chill on my arm at this moment, but sometimes gets to walking or running all over me. Maybe just more skittish than anything. I believe that the more I let her chill on me like this, and the bigger she gets, the more relaxed and calm she will become.

Can we add some more info to this fan club about these pink Chewbaccas?

What is their expected max size?

What is their reputation as far as temperament?

What are the ideal conditions to keep them under? Are they burrowers? Do they need deep substrate or a hide?

And how big are their eggsacs? :)

One of mine molted. That's 2 molts since march. Not bad. I'd say close to 2.5" now. I'm not good at guessing though.

Manly, that is a beautiful new addition. I can't say much about adult temperment because mine are slings. Right now they are pretty skittish.

Well, my Nhandu girl molted today, and is gorgeous. She is still pale, but the reds are really showing.

I have to say, i looked at her fresh molt under a microscope and couldn't see the spermathecae, which surprised me since I positively ID'ed her as female months ago for Joe. It was only hours later, after the molt had dried some and I looked again that I could see them.

:TGirl:

I hope she calms down this time. She has been so flicky and funny since I got her. I need to let her just sit on my knee for an hour or so to get her used to me.

Well, I got my girl out today and she has sat very relaxed and chill in my hand for half an hour now. mShe does seem more chill than last cycle.

I am noticing how broad her leg-banding is, and is it just me, or are these guys more leggy than other Ts? The pics of adult here don't look particularly leggy.

I've had this happen, too. Once they dry, the spermathacae just seem to 'pop'.

I'm hoping that is the case for my G. pulchra juvie. The last couple molts have looked male, though admittedly, they have also been quite mangled. But alas, the ventral view looks male too.

There are some awesome pics on this thread! : ) I noticed 2 pics of the Ts on hands on this page. For some reason, I haven't been brave enough to handle my 2 Nhandus (they are chromatus, not coloratovillosus). Are them maybe a bit less defensive than I thought? Or are you guys just brave? : )

Don't mind me, I just love handling Ts! Proceed with caution at your own risk.

That said, coloratovillosus does seem to be a more laid-back Nhandu from what I have read here. Also, I think the main issue with Nhandu's isn't so much their attitude as it is their flickiness and the strength of their urt hairs. Quite irritating as I understand.

I tend to like to work with my Ts from an early age, which seems to relax them more as they get bigger. I currently have a 7.25" Lp girl that I have worked with since she was 1". I frequently take her out and give her time to just sit in my hand or on my knee (for maybe 30 minutes) while I am doing office work at home. If I am slow and gentle when I work to get her out of her cage, she almost never flicks. Of course the risk to doing this is that a sling can decide to bolt in hand and vanish, and you have just lost your T!

Just a few sessions of this with my fairly newly aquired N. coloratovillosus (she is now 4.25") and she has stopped the raised rump behaivor and rarely flicks anymore. She also is far less flighty than when I first got her. First time I held her, she spooked and was up and over my shoulder in a flash!

I have also seen vids on YT of a chromatus as tolerant of being messed with as a G. pulchra! These Ts just need to get used to you and know that you aren't going to hurt them.

Let me again state though that Ts have fangs and any tarantula can bite. And not only are fang puncture wounds a bit worrisome, but I am even more scared of my reaction (to fling them across the room) and thus kill them. So handling is not just done at your risk, but also at the risk of your T's safety.

If you are set on handling them, but nervous, try using a leather glove or other. And always aim to let the T walk onto your hand rather than scooping them up or trying a pinch grab. They are much more relaxed that way.

So my Quasar molted today. A bit earlier than I expected, and she is definitely bigger. I got her two months ago at 3.5" and she is now 5.5".

She was a bit spazdic, but not too bad. I think I need to get her out more often and let her sit with me.

49934

Also, I noticed at the pet store last week when my friend got out his 6"+ girl how solid her frame was in a pinch grab. I was shocked. Then I got home and did a pinch grab on my girl and realized she too is solid. Much harder and sturdier than what I am used to with other Ts.

Dropped in at a friend's pet store a few weeks ago and he asked me to help him pair his big old girl "Melissa" with the mature male he had in the store. She had molted a few weeks before and was fed up. But she wasn't interested at first, rather, she climbed out of the tank. Later, he got in front of her and she opened up, spread out her fangs and was receptive, but he was too slow to get in their and avail himself of the invitation.

Not sure if he has been successful yet.

By the way, she is a big old girl, likely around 8". And a big sweet heart. And it is amazing to see Stu, who used to be a spider phobe, play rough with her like she was a dog, flipping her over and rubbing her belly/jostling her. He has a way with animals, and it is fun to watch.

She won't understand. Please don't do that, particularly with your new OWs... They're tarantulas, not dogs. They run on instinct, and as far as she knows, some big thing is poking around in her territory to eat her.

Yeah, I think squirting her (if that is what you mean) would have an opposite effect. It will be a negative feed-back loop. "Big thing comes into tank from above, and when it does and I try to defend myself, it squirts me with water. I have to get even meaner, because it IS out to get me."

Last fall, a friend had a young N. colo (same size as yours) that they wanted me to look at. After opening the cage and nudging it with a brush, she attacked it and was trying to sink fangs into it. Soon after, I scooped her into hand and she was fine. My friends thought I was insane.

I don't think Ts will respond to any kind of discipline, but in my experience, they calm down with time. Typically, I find that just letting them sit in my hand for say 30 minutes, will calm them down significantly. They come to realize that what they thought was a threat wasn't out to hurt them.

I am not recommending you do this as it takes experience and a comfort level with the Ts to try it. I wouldn't want someone getting bit trying what I do when they don't have the experience and feel for the Ts, but are just taking my word for it. And even with the experience, there is still a risk of getting bit.

What's more, such interactions will guarantee you get haired pretty bad at first.

I think she is stressed a bit...she needs time to acclimate and maybe because she is in premolt does not help her tude. :). My patience is not good and is something I need to be aware of when caring for my critters! I think you are much more patient than me! :)

I find my Brachies love cork as well, preferring to sit on it over sitting UNDER it as a hide (on Eco-Earth). I believe this is partly due to the pH of these materials. Coconut husk is slightly acidic.

I will keep this in mind.

ManlyMan7, that is very good info on the coco coir! Thank you :). So glad she has mellowed with the cork bark! :)

Yup. Sounds like a Nhandu to me!

And to think, tarantulas have very poor eyesight!

They detect vibrations with their setae (hairs) and are incredible. I have watched my Ts grab a cricket I dropped in before it ever hit the ground!

Chewie is settling in nicely! N. coloratovillosus are a smaller cousin eating machine like stirmi...these 2 species eat the most of all my T's! The only time they refuse prey is when in premolt :)...plus. Chewie is now in ideal conditions...warmth, space and humidity = happy Chewie!

This species is very active from what I see and are not shy about their appetites!

ManlyMan7

Yes, these are very active Ts, and nervous. But in my experience, they do tame down. My big 7" girl was a gem, and a friend of mine has an 8" girl (really) who he plays rough with her like a little dog. It is amazing to watch.

And yes, they have quite the feeding response. More than a year ago, I was visiting with someone who had a young female they thought was demonic. They called me crazy when I put a brush in her cage which she attacked vigorously, then had her in hand moments later.

Such awesome Ts!
